HAPPINESS = REALITY – EXPECTATIONS
Recently, I ran across an article in Huffington Post written by Tim Urban entitled “Why Gen Y Yuppies are Unhappy.” He dissects the unhappy predicament of the GYPSYs (Gen Y Protagonists & Special Yuppies), complete with diagrams of grass, flowers, and unicorns. If you’re the type that prefers lots of pictures in your recreational reading, just skim the colorful diagrams and you’ll be all set.
Urban takes us through the generations starting with the GI Generation or the “Greatest Generation” who grew up during World War II and the Great Depression and were definitely NOT GYPSYs. They gave birth to the Baby Boomers, who did even better than their parents ever expected them too (once they got over the hippie phase). This was an unprecedented time of economic prosperity for everyone. These Boomers, fill with optimism, told their children that they could be whatever they wanted to be, instilling the special protagonist identity deep within their souls. This left the GYPSYs with three fundamental characteristics:
- GYPSYs are wildly ambitious
- GYPSYs are delusional
- GYPSYs are taunted
Urban’s advice? Stay wildly ambitious, stop thinking that you’re special, and ignore what everyone else is (or is pretending to be) doing. Read Tim Urban’s full article, “Why Generation Y Yuppies Are Unhappy.”
